Yesterday evening I managed to find out a bit more on the problem with
the big blue blob I get when scanning at 600 dpi. I only get this if
the object is in touch with the long side (having coordinate 0). If I
move the object 1mm from the edge the blob disappears.

The stripes are about 10mm wide starting at about 145mm stretching
over parallel to the long side.
