I wondered if that might be the case, since most people seem to have
scanner devices in /dev/usb However from the sane-usb man page, I
understood that it was the backend that determined which method sane
used to communicate with the scanner, in which case I don't understand
how some people have got the N670U working.  Is there something else
that determines whether sane uses libusb or the scanner module?  And
if so, could I change it?

My apologies if this is a silly question -- if so, please ignore and
spend the time coding instead :-)
