Subject: Canon CanoScan N650U makes grinding noise after moving 1/4 in down the page

Hello,

I have downloaded and compiled sane-backends-1.0.9 both with the
plustek-sane-0 44 10 and the plustek-0.45-TEST5 driver packages. My problem
is the same when using either one of them.

I followed the compilation instructions (extract the plustek driver in the
sane-backends directory, etc.), and rather than removing the mandrake
sane-1.0.8 rpm that was already installed (many packages depend on
sane-backends, and rpm wants to remove them before removing sane-backends), I
chose to overwrite all of mandrake's sane stuff by the following configure
command:

./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --infodir=/usr/share/info
--mandir=/usr/share/man

I did verify that the files in /bin, /usr/lib/sane, etc. (specifically
scanimage) were replaced with the newly compiled ones. I replaced the
contents of /etc/sane.d by hand (as make install left it alone).

Now I was ready to try and detect the scanner, I loaded the scanner module
(needed to add "options scanner vendor=0x04a9 product=0x2206" to
/etc/modules.conf), and the device /dev/usb/scanner0 appeared.

So far, great.

Now, I ran sane-find-scanner. This also was successful:
===
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x2206) at /dev/usb/scanner0
  # Your USB scanner was detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
===

Next, I tried scanimage -L, and this also worked:
===
device `plustek:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a Canon N650U/N656U USB flatbed scanner
===

So now I thought I was ready to scan my first image. And this is where the
problem arises:

The scanner initializes by moving the head 1/4 inch down the surface and back
up again, then begins to scan...but when it reaches 1/4 inch, it begins to
emit a grinding sound and the head stops moving. After about a second of
grinding, the head returns to its "home" position, and a small, solid blue
image is returned from scanimage (or xsane)
(http://www.u.arizona.edu/~bronner/n650u.pnm).

I verified that the scanner is not locked, and that it is capable of scanning
in Windoze (both true).

Any suggestions for further troubleshooting will be received with enthusiasm.

Almost forgot: my system is Mandrake 9.0 running on a Pentium III 800
