Gerhard

I discovered what my problem was. I had several sane backends. I deleted
them all, downloaded the latest sane backend, frontend, and xsane and
re-compiled them all and bingo... It works now.

You can remove the Epson Perfection 1250 weirdness off the list of things to
investigate...
