What version of the backends are you trying?
The fast moves of the motor are also influenced by the setting of
dMaxMoveSpeed defined in the HWDefs structure, so I suggest at least
use the settings of the UMAX3400 for your experiments - BUT use
the current sources for this (SANE-1.0.11)...
