I also have this scanner.  I have noticed inconsistent performance as
well.  The driver locks up when I pair certain resolutions and color
depths.  I don't scan that often though, so I have been living with the
problem.

I am willing to help with testing or the code...I just need to find some
spare time.  Let me know if I can help.
