the specific reason is, that these old models use a Plustek specific 
parport ASIC inside, which is connected to the USB bus by a parport-to-
USB bridge.  In principle it might be possible to change the OpticPro PT12
code to work over the USB bridge and there's also some code that manages
to switch the lights, but I have no time to make all this work...
