I also think the problem ist your USB-subsystem. AFAIR there are some
problems in the 2.4.20 Kernel. You might upgrade to 2.4.21-pre something
or you can also try and use libusb instead of the scanner.o module.
In that case you have to install libusb and recompile SANE...

Here on my SuSE boxes, this works perfectly...
