Subject: Compiling or configuring the kernal?

Hi, I lost my system awhile back (because I was editing etc/fstab to get a tape drive
recognized)
Orginally I had used one of the howto's at the sane plustek site for getting my Optic
pro 9636T to work. I'm using SuSE 8.1 and I wonder if I need to configure the kernal
for loadable module support or not? Some recent instructions don't mention doing the
kernal compling. Can I just do the ./configure, make, make install and load the pt.drv
module and get it to work? Backend = Sane 1.12. Thanks JY
