Today I found the page http://www.linuxhacker.org/cgi-bin/search.cgi where
it's possible search the archives of this mailing list (don't know how I
managed to miss that before), and found that I'm not the only one with this
color problem.

For example:
http://www.linuxhacker.org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?3:mss:1597:200210:cdlnajpmmhmoekpfmfmp
http://www.linuxhacker.org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?3:mss:1667:200210:pjpipaijfdbfcpgckecm

Looks like the only way to make the situation a little bit better is to
close all processes / programs that are running before scanning.
So I tried to close kde and start xfce instead, stopped every process that
I could without killing the whole system, and tried to scan after that.
It produced much better results, grayscale scanning works well up to about
150 dpi, but color scanning is still far from useable even at 50 dpi.
(It is indeed better than before, but not useable.)

This is on an AMD XP 1700+ with 256 MB RAM.
DMA is enabled on the harddrives, and I didn't move the mouse or do
_anything_ else while scanning.
Any suggestions before I give up and throws the scanner out of the window?
:)
