Thanks! I already started to wonder if I was the only one in the whole
world that had any interest in getting this old scanner to work :)

Yes, I understand the problem.
Another thing I'm wondering is if it would be possible to give the scanning
process and the pt_drv module a higher priority, but that question is so
obvious that I'm sure that you have thought of that before and have your
reasons for not going that route.
(I tried to renice the xscanimage process, but that didn't help -the
communication is done on a lower level?)
