Hi James,
I'm afraid, that I'm the wrong person because I worte the Plustek backend
which does not support the EPSON 2400. Better direct your question
to the SANE devel list at sane-devel AT lists.alioth.debian.org, but you have
to be subscribed there...
Anyway, your problem looks to me like a USB-stack problem maybe updating
the kernel helps (only a wild guess)
