okay - seems to be the same old story. ECP is still not supported. If this is
detected, the backend gives up. I've done no tests so far to switch this mode

First step: Enter the BIOS and set the parport to EPP, NO ECP!!!!

before starting scanimage, enable the debug stuff:
export SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK_PP=255
then you can call scanimage, the output you got might be interesting.
BTW. what new hardware do you have, which kernel?
