Hi Gerhard,

I just experimented a little and have a few additions:
- with 75dpi black&white it happens always
- with 75dpi grey it happens also always
- 75dpi color works, at least it never happened during my tests
- preview scan works after doing one successful scan i.e. at 300dpi

Generally I can say using xsane the above happens always, using
scanimage I had some successful runs. Up to now I thought xsane is only
a gui to scanimage.. but maybe I am wrong at this point.
 
How do I enable debug messages? Using verbose does not deliver any
useful info.. when it started making that noise I canceled using CTRL-C

scanimage -v --resolution 75 --mode Binary -x 200 -y 260 > testscan
scanimage: scanning image of size 592x767 pixels at 1 bits/pixel
scanimage: acquiring gray frame
scanimage: received signal 2
scanimage: trying to stop scanner
scanimage: sane_read: Operation was cancelled
