Sir/Madam

I am trying to get a Canon LiDE30 scanner (usb) to work wite

       - RedHat9
       - sane backend 1.0.9

When I type "sane-find-scanner" I get back

found usb scanner (vendor 0x04a9 [Canon] product-0x220e [Canoscan] at
   libusb 002:002

I then type "scanimage --list-devices" and back comes

  no scanners were identified

I am "newish" to this and am far from clear of the difference between
 libusb and loading modules.

I do an lsmod and the module scanner.o is loaded
there is no line in /etc/modules.conf related to scanner so I don't
understand how scanner.o is in lsmod ?

 "dmesg | grep scanner" yields

 usb.c: registered new driver usbscanner
 scanner.c 0.4.9:USB Scanner driver

I suspect this is part of my problem but I need help to fix this.
Since I don't (at this time) understand enough about usb to know how this
 got loaded.

 Additional info

I downloaded the correct plustek driver for sane 1.0.9
and compiled it and installed it successfully but I can't load it it I get
 an error saying

   insmod pt drv failed
   make: *** [load] error 1

Any help would be sincerely appreciated

 Thanking you

 Ian Taylor
