the "new" plustek_pp backend can still be compiled as linux-kernel module...

You should either try and install libieee1248 or use the configure flag
--enable-parport-directio
but I think for FreeBSD the libieee1248 approach should work...

To be honest - No.
But before calling scanimage, try 
export SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK_PP=10
export SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_PP=10
Then try scanimage and send us the debug output....
