Ed,

What you want to can be done using the SANE protocol. But to use the 
SANE protocol you would need to move your scanner onto a Unix machine as 
the SANE backends are not supported under Windows (though there is 
support for Windows clients). If you'd like more information about SANE, 
have a look at http://www.mostang.com/sane to see if your scanner is 
supported. They've also got a mailing list you can join if interested.
