there's indeed a FAQ but I'm afraid that this question isn't answered...
Can you please send us a color picture (but please a small one, compressed and
in png format) that shows the problem?
Can you also send the output of cat /proc/pt_drv/device0/info?
For XSane please look at http://www.xsane.org
You might download the tar-ball and rebuild it on your own.
For simple testing you might use the xscanimage interface which is basic but
should work fine.
