Subject: op4830 scan probs

hi *

i'm trying to get my scanner to work on my box:
dual PIII/667MHz
Debian GNU/Linux 2.2
kernel 2.2.19
scanner: plustek OP4830P

i preformed the following steps:
1) i got sane-1.0.4 (backends), compiled and installed it. this resulted in the new
program 'scanimage'
2) i got the driver for my scanner that's said to work with sane-1.0.4, namely 'plustek-module-0_37_23.tar.gz',
compiled and installed this also.
3) i added the lines
   alias char-major-40 pt_drv
   post-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
   options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x387 lOffonEnd=0 mov=0
to /etc/modules.conf via 'update-modules'
4) i ran 'make load', which created the files in /dev

now, after i reboot, the scanner is there as 'scanimage -L' tells me so:
'plustek:/dev/pt_drv is a Plustek 4380P Driver Version 0.37 flatbed scanner'
BUT:
when i try to REALLY scan with 'scanimage -d plustek > testimage.ppm' the following
weird things happen:
1) the ccd-array of the scanner moves 3mm forward and then backward to its start position.
2) the 'scanimage' program obviously continues operation, i.e. reading data from the
scanner, as the prompt returns to the console i'm working on after maybe 20sec.
3) after that, i have a new file 'testimage.ppm' in my dir, but when i view it with
gimp, its empty, blank, white or whatever. anyway, it has a size of over 4MB.
4) if i try another scan, 'scanimage' tells me that no scanners are present, although
i have the 'pt_drv'-module still in the output of 'lsmod'.

i assume that there is data transferred from the scanner to the host, just the ccd-array
isn't moving. what could be the problem? under wind**s, it worked ;(.

another thing: what exactly is the difference between:
'plustek-module-0_37_23.tar.gz' and
'plustek-sane-0_37_23.tar.gz'?
do i maybe need plustek-sane instead of plustek-module, which i downloaded?

thanx very much for your help

rob
