So, I downloaded and installed plustek-sane-0.39.3 from
http://home.t-online.de/home/g-jaeger/plustek.html. When I do a cat
/proc/pt_drv/info, it returns: Plustek Flatbed Scanner Driver version
0.39-4. I notice that it says 0.39.4 rather than 0.39.3. Is that what it
should say? In addition, I'm still getting the grinding noise. After
looking at the FAQ, it looks like I may have one of the ASIC96001/3 based
scanners.
