For those interested in this area I've been assessing the Personal Java
reference implementation for CE 2.11 -
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/personaljava/ (know it's
a bit off the beaten track of LINUX-CE but seems appropriate as regards
Sun's CE offering).

Based in Java 1.1.6 it offers full AWT plus a consumer device
specific/customizable look & feel ('Touchable').

First indications are excellent. Non-optimized and a bit leaky.

Have even got Swing 1.1.1 installed which runs fine in the PJEE (Win32 PJava
emulation environment) but on the CE seems to shrink all components (Menu
Items, Buttons, Check Boxes etc.) to about 20% of the intended width. AWT &
Touchable, however, are fine on the CE (although seem to have hard coded
frame dimensions).#

Great to see floating frames back on the PalmSize.

	Sun's proposed a bit of vaporware called J2ME,  or Java 2 Micro
Edition which 
seems to be a set of API's for various kinds of small devices.  Details are 
conspicuously absent.

	Sun has released something really remarkable,  the kvm,  which is a 
minaturized Java virtual machine which fits easily in a palm pilot.  Speed
is 
about as good as first-generation JVMs,  which means about as good as 
languages such as Perl and Python.  So far as I know,  kvm has only been 
ported to the palm,  I bet Sun will license you the code if you pay them $$,

but I doubt we'll get it for free.

	Some features are missing from kvm,  and kvm wouldn't use the AWT
for 
user-interface,  it would use something else.

	For now I wouldn't get so excited about J2ME until I see some
details.
