erm, you should check whether what you want to port falls under
the original BSD license or the revised (advertisement free) BSD
license... it makes a *big* difference.
also, something that no one has mentioned as a possibility for
those who have contributed to MicroWindows/NanoX who would rather
stick with the GPL... the LGPL, even though GNU "officially"
discourages its use except in very special cases, makes a
perfectly fine option for a componant in a "mixed-license"
project...
