Just For the record, 

Redhat has done alot of work on gcc-2.96 and it compiles nice fast bins. 
All this was gone over in the alpha mailing list a week or so ago, you can
compile 2.2.18 with gcc-2.96 with Redhat 7.0 theres a makefile issue with
the older kernels or so Matt at Redhat said.
