supported in nxlib, so I may abandon that effort and stick with 117.

Graham - Don't give up yet!  In many cases, you can just
stub out the routine in nxlib/stubs.c, and then run the fltk
applications checking for problems.  Grepping and checking
the new FLTK source for XOpenDevice etc will also
let you know what FLTK is trying to do using the
new calls.  This is the method I used to get FLTK
running in the first place.
