I'll grab your test program and look at the results over here,
and send you comments.

For a starting point, checkpoint the linear24_drawarea_alphacol
routine, that's the entry point that should be called from 
the freetype driver (GdDrawAreaInternal).  FT2 creates an
8bpp alpha channel for the glyph, which is then combined
using drawarea_alphacol with the foreground color.
