When I was developing for nano-x (project on hold due to "financial considerations" - i.e. someone paid us a lot of money to do something else instead) I used to test our "embedded applications" on a 386/25 with 14meg RAM and 640x480 frame buffer.  I found that was a sufficient test for speed/size considerations, considering booting the darn machine used to load it to 0.8 anyway and to be left for a few minutes to "cool down" before doing any serious processing....

Oh, it could run X, but then again, they say Windows NT can run an enterprise level web server. Apparently :)
