Hi Gerhard,
I'm back again.

I have changed to the new SuSE 8.0 with kernel 2.4.28-4GB. So I must bring in
my scanner again, but this time it will not go round. I think I made again a
mistake.
I'm using my old archive of sane-1.0.3 and "plustek-sane-0_36_38.tar.gz
Also my old scanner Plustek Optic Pro 4831

Till to the end everything worked fine but if I made "make load" it's not
working.
Perhaps I must get new archives, maybe.
Will you please take a look at the message of the console.

Hi,

the problem is the old tar-ball, in the versions 0.41 and 0.42
this problem has been already solved!
I'm wondering about the version 2.4.28 ;-)))
I'm not sure which SANE-version they're using, I think 1.0.7,
so simply put this RPM onto you're machine and use plustek-module41
That should do the trick...

Yes You are right. It must be 2.4.18-4GB
Sorry.

You are right again, it is version 1.0.7-59 .

But I couldn't bring my scanner to work.

During the installation I couldn't see something what is looking wrong.

Hi Gerhard,

I'm still trying to bring the scanner to work. But it will not do.
I unload and uninstall all from the driver and also sane and made all new.
You told me

so simply put this RPM onto you're machine and use plustek-module41
That should do the trick...

Now I found a warning, what I don't see by the first time. I think it is the
mistake. Please take a look.

Hi Karsten,

my mail address is still working, see signature. I changed
the reply address to reduce spam mails....

Well the problem is only, that scanimage doesn't find the scanner
pt_drv is fine, it's loaded (see lsmod) and your scanner is here,
see cat /proc/pt_drv/device0/info...

To see the real problem, I need the debug output of SANE:
open a shell
do a
export SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK=12
then call scanimage -L and send me the output (remember not only
reply to this mail ;-)))

Gerhard

P.S.: Sorry for the late reponse...

Yes, now I have seen.

yes, my scanner is there, but first I must make an
insmod pt_drv
If I don't do so, the result is following.

Is okay. I know that you have a lot of to do, and that you are not only
working for the mailing list.

Perhaps, in my second mail from wednesday, I tried to uninstalled all and
unload all after this I made all new and the I found a mistake.
When I made make install, I got a warning, perhaps there is the mistake.
I will copy the step with the warning.

I think there it is what the driver is missing, but I don't know what this
means: Unresolved symbols in /lib/....

Have I made something wrong by the installation?

Karsten,

insmod is okay a user root, then the pt_drv should be loaded!
But I think it will not work that you run scanimage as root!

try again the following (as user Karsten or so):
export SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
export SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK=12
scanimage -L

I think there's something wrong with your installation!
You might check the dll.conf at /etc/sane.d
it may contain only one simple line named
plustek

I have done and here comes the output

Yes there was a mistake, all scannernames are standing in the
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf all in front with the kommentsign "#"
I removed the "#" in front of plsutek and got now the following output.

------------------------

the modul pt_drv is not load. I checked it just in this moment.
Even now, the output from
"scanimage -L" ist just the same if I load the modul pt_drv.

I think it is more than only something missing from the installation.
Because the modul pt_drv will not automatically be load.

Okay now we have the plustek backend back!
You now have to make sure, that the pt_drv is loaded...
and that the device node exists - think about one of the last
mails where you send me the output of lsmod:
[SNIP]
nathan:/home/karsten # lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by    Tainted: P
pt_drv                111264   0  (unused)
snd-pcm-oss            45152   1  (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss          11136   1  (autoclean)
NVdriver              946752  10  (autoclean)
parport_pc             25448   2  (autoclean)
lp                      5824   0  (autoclean)
parport                21856   2  (autoclean) [pt_drv parport_pc lp]
[SNAP]

That's all...

I think this is the problem, if you will look at the following lines
Scanimage said, that it can't open the pt_drv device:
-----------
[plustek] open: can't open /dev/pt_drv as a device
-----------

---------------------------------------------------------------------
First I checked the modules, because I already filled in the lines in the
/etc/modules.conf
------------
alias char-major-40	pt_drv
pre-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x378 lOffonEnd=0 mov=0
------------
normaly the module pt_drv must be load automatically, but it will not .
In teh first part you see it is not there.
Then I loaded the module
pt_drv
with insmod and it is there.
If I made "scanimage -L" nothing happened, even mot the lamp is starting.
I startet xsane and Xsane said there is no scanner reachable.
Now I made that from your last mail with the debug and I think that there must
be something other. Because of plustek and the line

[plustek] open: can't open /dev/pt_drv as a device

I don't know why it happened.

I hope you know a way to help me. With the SuSE 7.1 and also with the
mandrake 7.2 your driver was working fine. Only my pc was not realy working so
good. Now I'm lucky with my pc but the driver is not more working.

Still one question
I've made a copy of the lines during the installation
Waht does the following line mean:
---------------
nathan:/home/karsten/Plustek-Treiber0.41/plustek_driver # make install
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/misc
install -c -m "644" pt_drv.o /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/misc
/sbin/depmod -a
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/misc/pt_drv.o
nathan:/home/karsten/Plustek-Treiber0.41/plustek_driver #
---------------
The driver is missing there something but I don't know what.
