I am mainly using the 16f628 (and the a) in my project. It's cheaper to
buy them in 25-packs from digikey...

I think you can use the internal voltage reference to feed one input of
the comparator, thus enabling you to build a simple ADC. The only
problem is that the voltage reference is somewhat limited, since if I
remember well it has only a 16 or 32 steps resolution. Check out the
Microchip reference manual of the pic16f628 for more info, it is pretty
clear. Check out the speed and precision of the voltage reference, to be
sure it meets your needs.

I have no experience with the 16f88, and I did not really had a need for
a good ADC yet.
