You do not need to go to the dark side. Use PICkit 2 and it
supports Linux and Mac OS X along with Windows. It is also faster
than PICStart+.

Forget about Wine which does not have good support for USB.
And as of now, PICkit 3 is not as good as PICKit 2 (less reliable,
easily turned into a brick) and it does not support Linux.

In the future, PICKit 3 may support Linux.
