"I want to make Linux support an XYZ card"
"Im sorry we only allow binary drivers"
"oh goodbye"

[nowdays]

"Hi majorvendor foo purchasing here we want to source 50,000 XYZ cards"
"Oh great yes, expenses paid lunch coming right up"
"We do want Linux support as we may be certifying our stuff for Linux"
"Oh.. umm. I need to talk to the boss"

And vendors are changing policy for these kind of reasons
