Could I get nano-X to work on a 286 cga with 1mb ram?

I'm not aware that anyone has written a cga mode driver for nano-X.
(what's the graphics ability of a cga card?) But via elks or dos it's
entirely feasible that microwindows/nanox will run perfectly. I suggest you
investigate ELKS for an OS and then nano-X on top of that. I alsu suspect
that you will have to write some code of your own to get cga running :)

Yes, if you run DOS. Victor just submitted a DJGPP/GRX
port of Microwindows. I don't know if DJGPP supports 286
or just 386...

Just 386+ PM code. I've modified AT&T-2-Intel ASM converter that I found
to take x86 GAS .S files and turn them into valid DOS 64K .COM NASM ASM
files. You can find this util at <http://fdcoder.n3.net/a2i/> in a zip
file. Otherwise, there is no way to get GCC/DJGPP output even real mode
code.

As Darran just mentioned, you will have to hack a CGA driver,
which will be some work. Take the scr_bios.c driver and
grab an old IBM book and find the bios mode for 320x200,
and pass that to int10. In addition, the drawline readpixel
address calculations are slightly different, I think.

I'd write it for you but I don't have any CGA machines
anymore ...

I thought (S)VGA cards had a CGA backwards compatibility mode?

Modes 0x00 - 0x06 are part of the CGA spec and have their memory located
at 0xB800:0x0000. I have two 8088s with CGAs that I'd be willing to test
DOS programs on. The following is from RBIL w/irrelevant parts snipped...

They do but they support it as if they were VGA cards which sometimes
changed the resolution & color characteristics.
