From: "Amit Kulkarni" ####@####.#### Date: 23 Sep 2000 04:11:13 -0000 Message-Id: <IDEAJDCLGKLCPMADHFMOMEIKCCAA.akdon@yahoo.com> hi, I am a final year computer science undergraduate student in India and am searching for a 1 year project for 3 people. I came across the microwindows website and found the GUI interesting. Primarily i am thinking about writing a widget library for microwindows. Also if anybody could suggest any more similar kind of projects to do on the small GUI then i shall be grateful. Looking forward for interesting suggestions..... First, I've to specify that I'm not a developer of microwindows I'm just interested about the project andi follow it from a while (like viewml) but I'm only a..user:) then i think it will be nice to have the porting of gtk on microwindows, with 3 ppl i think it will be not a long work , some weeks, and then import gnome and some gnome application would be nice! To have our preferred desktop manager on microwindows:) and a lot of usefull program too!! this is my idea but maybe it's better you wait someo 'guru' ideas:) bye good work

It would be cool to have (a subset of) wxWindows (www.wxwindows.org) running on MicroWindows. As noted in previous emails, there could be different ways of doing this: (1) using the GTK+ port of wxWindows (2) using the WIN32 port of wxWin, (3) using the forthcoming 'generic' widget set being written for wxWin, which will sit on top of basic drawing primitives (which could themselves be implemented using either X or WIN32 primitives). The generic port will also eventually work with MGL from SciTech Software, (http://www.scitechsoft.com/dp_mgl.html) which is a highly portable basic graphics layer: another interesting candidate for porting to MicroWindows. We are a group of 3 people and are in search for a 2 month educational and reasearch project. We found out this microwindows program extremely striking and would like to possibly do some work on this platform. The primary requirements might be stated as 1) Must be finished within 2-3 months time 2) Should primarily involve programming rather than porting Our primary idea was writing a widget library atop microwindows. But we have observed that fltk has been ported for microwindows. I would really appreciate it if anybody could suggest a similar idea. Here's a small but I think useful project... Write a 'dialog' equivalent in fltk/microwindows. It can be written from scratch rather than ported, the only requirement is to have the same syntax as the base curses program so that it can simply be dropped into existing shell scripts. This would give one application that could be used on both X and Nano-X and would be useful on small distributions to add a nice UI to shell scripts. Once the base functionality is there, add featues to wrap more FLTK widgets. * * Regards, * Amit Kulkarni * Visit me at http://amitkulkarni.cjb.net * richard. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Offer Widget FAQ --> http://reality.sgi.com/widgetFAQ/ {X,Motif,Trust} on {Irix,Linux} __________________________________________http://reality.sgi.com/offer/

Does it need to be a seperate project of your own, or could you contribute to microwindows itself? A couple of ideas: * Add selection and drag and drop support to Nano-X. I have an API drawn up for this that I never got around to implementing. * Write some tiny Nano-X applications such as a program launcher, a status/clock/launcher panel thingy, a file manager, an improved terminal, a calendar/diary, an address book, etc. -- --------------- Linux- the choice of a GNU generation. -------------- : Alex Holden (M1CJD)- Caver, Programmer, Land Rover nut, Radio Ham : -------------------- http://www.linuxhacker.org/ --------------------

Again ? OK, here are my suggestions: - build a stable development environment for nano-X + fltk. There are currently too many different versions floating around. It should have proper font supprt _without_ freetype or type1 support (though it should be added in a second step). - develop double buffering for nano-X - develop a stable and functional nanowm (or similar). The current version is not very functional. What I personally would love to have is a WM that supports own menus for windowing functions and proper configurable resources for window decoration. What I have in mind is to run this system on a PDA later on. My current concept for this is to have mostly all applications run fullscreen without any decorations (no titlebar or something). Child windows should have at least a small border by which they can be dragged and, selectable by the application, have a titlebar. The windowmanager menu should include a window list which can be used to switch between the applications. This menu should popup using a hotkey or maybe an onscreen button. - Include a virtual keyboard and some handwriting recognition as widgets into fltk. This would make it very easy for application developers to add a button to select either keyboard, recognition or nothing as input. Those could be implemented as seperate windows that can be moved around the screen. I think this all would keep you busy some time ;) If you intend to do this I would be glad to assist you in any though my time is very limited at the moment. > Regards, > Amit Kulkarni Viele Grüße nils faerber -- kernel concepts Engel & Faerber GbR Tel: +49-271-771091-12 Dreisbachstr. 24 Fax: +49-271-771091-19 D-57250 Netphen D1 : +49-170-2729106 --

We are actively involved porting FLTK to Nano-X, but it would be great to port FLTK to the Microwindows win32 API. This is primarily a programming project, since Microwindows implements an exact win32 api, and all that's needed is to implement those unimplemented calls already coded in the FLTK for Windows version. Another very needed project would be to finish off the custom controls for Microwindows win32 API. These controls include: static, single line edit, multi-line edit, pushbutton, checkbox, radio box, group box, list box, combo box. In addition, we could then add dialog management win32 style. This would interpret win32 .res files and allow Microwindows to run them. Thus programs laid out on MS VC++ systems could run on Linux.
