I have it working now, and it works like a charm!

The problem was due to different combinations at different times of these 3 things:
IP address specification
the 'allow read post' line,
case sensitivity of 'none' in authentication.

I had tried using telnet from the windows box, prior to my OP, as I was frustrated by Outlook Express' cryptic error messages.

Once again, thank you for your help.  My internet connection has a monthly data allowance, and we should now be able to at least keep our news traffic to a minimum.

I am also gaining confidence in Linux as I go ;o)

I think, you have to insert one AccessClient Block like this:



Client 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 {
allow read post
# deny access to all newsgroups
List *
Read *
PostTo *
# allow users to gain additional privileges by
# authenticating using standard passwd semantics
# allow to read * and to post to at.* after successful
# authentication
Authentication none
}
