I had a similar problem.  I'm forwarding a fix that worked for me.

This method isn't completely automatic since you need to set
permissions on /proc/bus/usb/001/00? every time you plug in the
scanner (or reboot).  You might want to look into using the
/etc/hotplug directory to set the permissions,
http://sm3600.sourceforge.net/hotplugging.html.  I haven't tried this
yet.
