Hello,

Problems with:

Mandrake 7.0
Plustex Optic Pro 9636P scanner
Sane 1.0.2 with plustek-sane-0_36_16.tar.gz

Followed instructions in the plustex-sane INSTALL file. Got as far as
'make load' whereupon this happens:

/sbin/modprobe pt_drv || exit 1
/lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/misc/pt_drv.o: unresolved symbol
parport_unregister_device
/lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/misc/pt_drv.o: unresolved symbol

/lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/misc/pt_drv.o: unresolved symbol parport_release
make: *** [load] Error 1

Recompiled with debug flag on.
Output from dmesg included below signature below.

I'd be grateful if anyone could help with this?

Best regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

your system has not loaded the parport module!
The pt_drv module needs the parport module to be able
to share the port with other devices. Have you added
the following lines to your /etc/conf.modules file?

alias char-major-40 pt_drv
post-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x378

and restarted your system?
This should normally force the parport module to be loaded prior to
the pt_drv module.
For testing, you can load parport manually -
modprobe parport

this should work as well.

Gerhard,

Thanks for the advice.

I'm afraid I couldn't get the thing to work even following your advice.

My conf.modules file looks like :
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias char-major-40 pt_drv
post-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x378

lsmod tells me:

[root@localhost /root]# lsmod
Module Size Used by
parport_pc 7604 1 (autoclean)
pt_drv 84428 0 (unused)
parport 8084 1 [parport_pc pt_drv]
sound 64184 0 (autoclean) (unused)
soundcore 3524 3 (autoclean) [sound]
soundlow 300 0 (autoclean) [sound]
ppp 21036 2 (autoclean)
slhc 4392 1 (autoclean) [ppp]
supermount 14880 2 (autoclean)
nls_iso8859-1 2052 1 (autoclean)
nls_cp437 3580 1 (autoclean)
vfat 11004 1 (autoclean)
fat 32640 1 (autoclean) [vfat]

I eventually ended up with
device '1' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device
device '2' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device

So after getting slightly frustrated and following mailing list hints, I
deleted everything and started again using Sane 1.0.1 instead of 1.0.2.
Now everything compiles and loads first time (but the lamp doesn't light)
but when I type scanimage -L, I see:

scanimage: error in loading shared libraries: libsane.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

I'm sorry for being such a dumboid, but where is this library supposed to
be? I tried 'find'ing it and it doesn't appear to exist anywhere in my
directory tree..

Mike

Hi Mike,

well first of all, you manged to load the module, great!
- lsmod reports pt_drv

Now to sane:

You made:
-unpacking
-configure
-make
-make install (as root)

Did you?

Then the libs should be in /usr/local/lib/sane as the default
prefix is /usr/local

Dear Gerhard,

Very many thanks for your advice so far. I'm still suffering from a number
of problems with getting sane + plustek driver to work properly. I've
encountered just about every problem in the mailing list archives - I
guess I'm just unlucky or stupid or both. Some have resolved themselves.
Some not. Here are my remaining difficulties:

Current setup:

Mandrake 7.0
Plustek Optic Pro 9636P scanner
Sane 1.0.1 with plustek-sane-0_36_18

(1) If I try scanning with xscanimage my scanner usually makes a nasty
horrible whirring noise and needs to have its plug pulled fairly rapidly.
I've seen this referred to in previous messages without any apparent
solution.

(2) I can only get the parport modules to load properly by doing it
manually with 'modprobe' after I boot up my system. My etc/conf.modules
file looks like:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias char-major-40 pt_drv
post-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x378 lOffonEnd=0 mov=0
but my system doesn't seem to like it.

(3) I know how to stick new plug-ins into Gimp (1.0.4) and yet I can't get
the Aquire stuff which interfaces to xscanimage to appear in the menu.
After some investigation, it appears that the following is the problem:

/home/me/.gimp/plug-ins/xscanimage: GIMP support missing.
wire_read: unexpected EOF (plug-in crashed?)

If I add a '-lgimp' after the GIMP_LIBS = flag in the Makefile which
compiles xscanimage it says:

/usr/lib/libgimp.so: undefined reference to `PLUG_IN_INFO'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Sigh. I appreciate this is not a plustek problem, but does anybody know
how to compile xscanimage with GIMP support?

I guess that's enough to be going on with. I would be immensely grateful
to anyone who can offer help with any of the above (before I commit some
serious violence in front of my poor pet cat who has had to put up with a
lot of swearing and teeth grinding over the last few days!!)

Best wishes,
Mike

Do "lsmod" and see if the lp.o module is loaded. It is known to
cause this noise problem. Remove it with "rmmod lp" and reload it
later if needed. You can write a small script file to do this
automatically.

I've never seen the plip option in the parport_pc pre-install. Are
you sure it should be there? What does the dmesg output say about
loading these modules (Can you be more specific about "my system
doesn't seen to like it"?)

I think there is a general problem with some versions of gimp and
plugins- none of them seem to work. That is a gimp problem and I
don't know if it has been fixed yet.

It's probalbly not much help.
I use xsane (0.60) as plugin for GIMP and all worked fine from the very first
second. So if you don't insist in using xscanimage I'd suggest to try this.
