hello to everybody,
i encountered big problems trying to make my canoscan n650u run under suse
linux 8.1.
i am totally new to linux so please don't be offended by my questions
which may be trivial to many of you.
what i've done so far: i (think i) have followed step-by-step the
instructions given in Plustek-USB.txt (sorry, lots of text):
How to use and configure the Plustek USB backend
------------------------------------------------
Please note, that the following is only needed, if you need to upgrade
a SANE version...
=> what does "to upgrade" exactly mean? do i have to uninstall the
installed sane-1.0.8-46-package under suse linux 8.1 or not? (i tried
both)
Preparations
------------
What do we need ?
a SANE backends archive (i.e. sane-backends-1.0.9.tar.gz)
=> O.K.
a driver archive (i.e. plustek-sane-0.45-3.tar.gz)
=> O.K. (note, i used build 3)
(even though i just saw that there are newer versions available, i think
my problem is more "fundamental" than just not having the newest version.
pleas see the following. if you think i should run everything with the
newer versions, i'll do that. but please see what i've done so far.
thanks)
(...)
Assumptions
-----------
Our starting point is your home-directory:
:~>
The packages (here sane-backends-1.0.9.tar.gz und
plustek-sane-0.45-3.tar.gz)
are in the /tmp directory.
=> O.K.
Let's go:
---------
Change to your home directory and create a sane directory
cd ~
mkdir sane
unpack your sane tar-ball (here "sane-backends-1.0.9.tar.gz")
to this "sane" directory
cd sane
tar xvzf /tmp/sane-backends-1.0.9.tar.gz
Now unpack your plustek-sane tarball (here "plustek-sane-0.45-1.tar.gz")
to the backends directory:
cd sane-backends-1.0.9
======================================================================
=> shouldn't this be "cd sane-backends-1.0.9/backend" ? (i tried both)
======================================================================
tar xvzf /tmp/plustek-sane-0.45-1.tar.gz
Now do the ./configure step...
Especially for SuSE with a preinstalled SANE-RPM:
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc
Then do the make step and after that as root user perform the make install
step.
That's all!
=> O.K. everything except the "backend-directory"-thing
Before using, make sure that the USB scanner device driver is loaded:
modprobe scanner
or
modprobe scanner vendor=0x7b3 product=0x17
=> if i am logged in as a normal user i get "bash: modprobe: command not
found" (for both commands)
if i am logged in as super-user nothing really happens (but no error
message as above, just new prompt appears)
You might need to add the following line to /etc/modules.conf, if the
scanner is not
supported directly - vendor and product must match your device!
options scanner vendor=0x7b3 product=0x17
=> i checked, this was already there
If you're not sure about the vendor and product id of your device, simply
load
the USB subsystem and plug in your scanner. Then do a
cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
and look for the scanner
=> vendor:04a9 product: 2206 (does it make a difference if i write "a" or
"A"?
Now you have to configure the backend. Edit the file
/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf
and fill in the appropriate vendor and product id (see there for examples)
=> i did this. first i entered:
[usb] 0x04a9 0x2206
device /dev/usbscanner
=> then (after trying and reinstalling) i left it to:
[usb]
=> sorry, do i mess up stuff by just reinstalling stuff? sorry, i know
that under windows you shouldn't do that. but except for the
yast2-possibility to uninstall thing and the "simpler" method of just
deleting things i don't know what to do.
=> by the way, is there any good and easy literature for newbies
concerning things like that? i haven't found much in the suse
documentation (i also searched the web-databases. perhaps i am just not
looking into the right places)
This is it...
=> O.K., and now? if i enter "scanimage" at the prompt (as normal user), i
get the message: scanimage: no SANE devices found (sane-1.0.8-46 is
installed. if i remember right, with sane being uninstalled i got a
message, that the "scanimage-command" couldn't be found (?). sorry, not
100% sure about that. at this point i don't feel like doing that again
(unless you say it's necessary), afte
