Hi Bob,
the error you have should have been fixed in sane-1.0.4.
It has nothing to do with missing libs...
It occurs if sane does not find any scanner device...
I recommend to remove all of your old sane-stuff and
reinstall the current sane release and driver 0.37
To find out which version of sane you have, you might
try
scanimage -V
