I think your system is not running on framebuffer even though it exists.
You will have to change the bootloader configuration to use framebuffer
driver.
I had the same problem, but after doing this change it worked.

I tried to run bin/demo put I got the error:
nxclient: retry connect attempt 1
...(I got the same error 10 times)
nxclient: retry connect attempt 10
cannot open graphics
Is it possible that I did not compile the nano-X correctly ?

Try running bin/demo on its own. It is a win32 api executable
that does not require the server. The src/*.sh scripts are
there to run the demos requiring a server.
