Can SYSV IPC messenging and the select system call be combined?
I can't see how, and this would rule out a lot of applications
that needs to wait for external resources likes network
connections, serial input (mice), keyboard...

Not many uses SYSV IPC, so I would personally not spend time on it.
It is the shared memory that is the killer.
