Being an dyed in the wool open source guy myself, I have been keeping
PNG support on my wish list for a while. If we stay on schedule here at
Century, then I believe we will probably have some sort of PNG support
by the end of the year (I would do it now, but unfortunately, other more
interesting and pressing matters await me).
But if you (or anyone else) is interested in adding PNG support, there
are two approaches you can take:
Using .JPG as an example, you can write a handler for PNG using the
third party libpng (available anywhere fine Open Source is provided), or
using .XPM as an example, you can write your own parser.
The list can debate which approach is better. One one hand, you have a
new dependancy that everyone will have to compile, but on the other
hand, you get very robust and fast support very easily.
Anyway, thats the status.
