It's a specialized piece of hardware.  In our current system (DOS with a
cheezy multitasking OS layered on top of it), we've wrote module (in
assembly) that runs every 30 milliseconds or so and fills a mailbox with the
row/col of any hit it detects.  It's a very simple device actually.
