 ??? the way 1 u described sets a kernel command line parameter which
sets VGA mode to that particular hex number.. check out
??/Documentation/ to find out more about kernel parameters?? or u can
see the source code too. usually this parameter u set will enable a
default framebuffer mode which is vesa framebuffer mode if u used the
default linux installation (and depending on what the installer detects
your graphics card as)

by the way... if u managed to enable a framebuffer console... u are
supposed to see a penguin logo on the upper left hand corner of your
screen...

maybe u can try checking your .config in your /usr/src/linux?? and see
whether the framebuffer option is enabled or not.

please elaborate more on your current set-up
