There is a comment that tells you this near the top of font_freetype2.c. I
don't remember what it says, I just remember writing it.

There are a couple of #defines in font_freetype2.c that control whether or
not to use the caching API. This API is not yet stable - it changes
between releases of FreeType. Disable both kinds of caching & it should
work. (Or - better - fix the caching to work with the latest FreeType2 &
send us a patch. Please try to follow the existing style of using #if to
detect the FreeType version & automatically use the right caching code).
