Hello Paul

i did submit a patch for exactly this problem
some 2 weeks ago. It seems the patch integration
is still a bit in a delay. your other hints
are new to me, but do sound reasonable.

other than that... thanks for the good works
in improving the codebase quality. my only
"hot" idea for further improvements would be
the use of intel's c compiler for linux with
all warnings turned on. it does provide you
more hints on even just likely bugs than
anything else i am aware of right now.
(and every single warning is switchable.)
