On the other hand, there seems to be a lot more interest in fonts now then
there has been in a very long time, so it would be in our best interest
to not let any *more* applications fall through the cracks.

How about a config option to control the broken behavior, and leave it off by
default?  That way we could encourage the right behavior while at the same
time giving legacy apps a way out.
