HI,

(Pardon me if this is a dumb question)

Is there good hand writing recognition working on Nano-X?

I am porting Sun's Java 2ME to the VTECH Helio running VR Linux, and
will either need it or the virtual keyboard.

Thanks for your help,

Robert

PS: I was working on the more feature filled Personal Java from Sun, but
they seem to be going with J2ME instead, as are a number of the
PDA/phone developers.

Robert - The short answer is yes and no. We do have a hand writting
program (nxscribble) which runs in its own window, which works very
well. But we don't have any offical app that works with the handwriting
region on the VTECH Helio. However, I believe that CCYau,
####@####.#### has also been working on the Helio, and has a
driver for specifically for the Helio handwriting. You might want to
talk to him.

Thank you very much!

I will examine it, maybe kludge it up so that there is a phantom undisplayed
window that appears on the same location as the touchscreen writing area that
uses the nxscribble code.

I only need one app running, my JVM, so if I can keep things in user space,
it might be quicker getting the port out the door.

Have you tried it? Pull down the source and try it out. Century
Software also has a complete binary download for framebuffer
as well as X11 at http://embedded.centurysoftware.com

The handwriting recognizer is currently Graffiti compatible, but
it's based on a stroke recognizer that has a trainer available.

The Helio is pretty slow, and doesn't have much memory. There
might also be a speed issue, so you might want to try it on
a slower PC first.

Greg

So, I was awoken one night with my brain screaming at me how to
implement decent handwriting recognition. My brain would of course not
leave me alone and let me go back to sleep until I wrote it down.

Whats the status of open source handwriting recognition on HPC
platforms? Is anyone *seriously* working on it? I'd like to but lack of
hardware makes actual implementation somewhat less interesting. Heh.

I'll have to clean up my ranting and post it. Maybe start a sourceforge
project. Whee.

Ah screw it, here's my half edited and somewhat organised late night
brain dump rantings that may or may not make sense to anyone else:
