Likely you will need to write an optimized screen driver for the 4bpp or 2bpp display that you're likely running. There has been some work in this area, but I don't have anything I can release yet. You might check out the src/drivers/fblin4hp.c in the current CVS for an initial optimized implementation that writes 32 bits at a time, rather than just a pixel at a time.
