Hi,
I was puzzled about framebuffer, and I have several problems. My
platform is intel x86, and I have matrox card in this pc. Also, I use
nano-X. I have several problems as followings:
1. now, I can open /dev/fb0(because I have already rebuilt linux kernel
to support framebuffer).
but I don't how to use it to display. For example, where can I chose
video mode, bpp etc.? ioctl() can do a lot of things, but I do't know
how to use it in detail. Is there any references?
2. why don't I have fbset program? I can't run fbset.
3. why don't I have fb.modes in /etc directory?

Hi,

Did you see TUX in the upper left corner of the screen when you
booted Linux? If not then you are not using the framebuffer yet. You
have to modify your /etc/lilo.conf file and rebuild (reinstall
whatever..) lilo. If you provide the "vga=ask" line in lilo.conf,
then you will be asked to choose the video mode.

These two sites should help you get your frame buffer set up:
http://www.tahallah.demon.co.uk/
http://www.linux-fbdev.org/

Good luck,
Gary James

You can get RPM of fbset from rpmfind.net.
Using that you can change the bpp etc, there is no need to
use any ioctl directly.
