Terrific, thanks for the clarifications! I cleaned up
the sane libs and did a clean 1.0.9 install so I can
follow changes to the Plustek driver more closely. 

The header notes in checkmerlin.c mentioned 1.0.8 and
checkmerlin does work as intended, that's why I
thought (mistakenly) I might be onto something.
