Yes,  modprobe scanner, and lsmod shows scanner loaded.

We didn't compile and install the corresponding sane-frontends, just the
sane-backends 1.0.10.  I understood from what I read that the front ends
were optional, as other programs would provide frontends (like xsane).

This does mean the stock Red Hat 8 sane-frontends 1.0.8-<something> is
still installed.

Am I mistaken?
